The COVID19 pandemic has had a strong impact on tourism activity. One of the main consequences of the closure of activities has been widespread loss of employment. This situation has increased the vulnerability and precariousness of workers in tourism. Although it is not a new context, it has been greatly aggravated by the pandemic. The consequences for workers, their households and communities, have been more or less severe depending on the social protection support accessible in each State.
This online seminar aims to help analyse and discuss the following issues:
• What are the reasons for the strong fragility and precariousness of work in tourism that have become even more evident during this pandemic?
• How jobs in various tourism activities are affected differently, e.g. seafarers, hotel workers, self-employed tour guides, people in the informal economy, and others?
• What social effects does the loss of employment in highly tourism-dependent places have?
We also want to deepen the collective discussion on what reactions and strategies should be proposed by organizations linked to the Transforming Tourism Initiative.
